Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-AMS installed on the Int'l Space Stn. few days back started detecting large No. of Cosmic ray events......

Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) in space shuttle Endeavour's payload bay was provided by an Expedition 27 crew member during a survey of the approaching STS-134 vehicle prior to docking with the International Space Station in this photo provided by NASA and taken May 18, 2011.

“We’ve collected thousands of events so far,” says Samuel Ting, a Nobel Prize winning physicist of MIT and spokesman for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.

The AMS-2 is a $2 billion particle physics experiment that will use a large magnet to create a magnetic field to bend the path of charged cosmic particles. Scientists hope to find out more information on what composes the universe and its origin. It’s hoped the AMS-2 will also be able to provide information on other cosmic phenomena including pulsars and gamma rays.
